—The county magistrates in attendance where Mr. W. G. Sheddan (chairman), Mr. C. G. M. Skinner, and Mr. T. T. Fowke.

STEALING SWEDE TURNIPS.

—John Sweatman, who did not appear, was charged with having stolen some Swede turnips from a field by the side of the river Medina, in the occupation of Mr. Micha Morgan, of Fairlee.

—It appeared in evidence that the complainant, having lost about ten bushels of turnips from the field, set a policeman to watch on Tuesday, and defendant was seen to go there in a boat and commence helping himself to some of the finest turnips, but on looking round and seeing a policeman in the distance he hastily took to his boat and rowed back to Newport.

—Defendant was fined 10s and to pay 7s 6d costs.

THE NOTORIOUS EDITH WESTWOOD “BORROWING” AT VENTNOR. Edith Westwood, alias Sarah Rabbits, Lady Douglas, Mrs. Col. Harcourt, &c., of Shrewsbury, appeared to answer a charge of obtaining ten shillings of Mr. George Wells, of Ventnor, surgeon, by means of false pretences.

—The prosecutor did not appear, and Edith was discharged. She left the Island via Cowes the same day.
