Is this 1859 reference to a George Inn in Hilsea just a misplaced George Inn on Portsdown Hill? If so, the Duncan’s Head being the one on Copnor Road seems increasingly likely - and William White is just very bad at geography.

Richard Softly, the keeper of the Portsbridge Turnpike-gate, is convicted at the George Inn, Portsdown, of charging excessive tolls. Softly has appealed the conviction to the County Quarter Sessions.
