THE BOROUGH PRISONERS.—Thanks to the exertions of his Worship the Mayor, the arrangements for the disposal of the Milton Gaol to the Government have now been definitely concluded. The necessary furniture and fittings were taken into the building last week, and four officers have arrived, together with the newly-appointed governor. The magistrates were enabled to announce this morning that all the borough and other prisoners would in future be sentenced to undergo their respective periods of punishment within the bounds of the borough. The public will, we are sure, appreciate the ability with which this negotiation has been conducted by the Mayor.

1878 tallies neatly with the building of Kingston Prison on Milton Road. But “Milton Gaol”? What’s that about? Unless we’re talking about the disposal of the site?
