Extract of a Letter from Portsmouth, Oct. 20
“For two or three evenings past a great number of men belonging to the Deptford, Marlborough, and Newark men of war, assembled together on Gosport Beach, and fought one ship’s company against another, with cutlasses, &c. and notwithstanding the vigilance of the officers, they could by no means disperse them. Great mischief was done, several of them had their arms and hands cut off, and 25 of them have been sent to the hospital wounded.”
