Quote
On Tuesday the troops in garrison, at Gosport, and in the neighbourhood, were marched to Hilsea Barracks, to witness the punishment of Kennedy and O’Callaghan, privates of the 54th regiment, who had been sentenced, by a Court Martial held on them, to receive, one of them 1,500, and the other 1,000 lashes, for attempting to stab with their bayonets an Officer of the 31st regiment, who interfered to advise them to orderly conduct, on finding them engaged in a quarrel in the streets.
—Their offence was so enormous and aggravated in its circumstances, that they were ordered to receive as many lashes as could with safety to their lives be inflicted on them; and each of them received upwards of 400 lashes at that time.
