THE JURY LISTS.—Mr. James Holloway, of Alverstoke, appeared to have his name struck off the jury list for his parish, as he was over 60 years of age; and he therefore claimed exemption.—The application was granted.
ALLEGED ROBBERY.—John Knight was remanded until Monday on a charge of having stolen a portion of a set of harness and two whips.
STEALING A BARREL OF BEER.—John Sullivan, a driver of the Royal Artillery, stationed at Hilsea, was charged with stealing a barrel containing 18 gallons of beer, the property of Mr. T. Amey, brewer, of Petersfield.—On the 20th instant some men in the employ of the prosecutor were conveying beer to Portsmouth upon two trucks, drawn by a traction engine; and when at Hilsea Pond they stopped to fill the boiler with water. They then had a conversation with the prisoner and another soldier, and they wished them “Good night.” On arriving at The Green Post public-house they missed the barrel of beer from the hindermost truck; and it was subsequently found, empty and broken, at the back of Hilsea Barracks. A man named Thomas Moore, of Hilsea, saw two men (whom he could not identify) roll a cask of beer past his house in the direction of the barracks. The prisoner was put into the guardhouse by the Military Police for being drunk. The Magistrates thought the evidence insufficient to convict the prisoner, who was therefore discharged.
NON-PAYMENT OF POOR-RATES.—A number of persons were summoned for non-payment of poor-rates; and in each case an order for payment, with costs, was made by the Magistrates.
